New non-stop Aeromexico flight will bring business, tourist traffic to YYC, say officials

Junio 16, 2017

A new daily flight between Calgary and Mexico City is expected to boost business and tourist travel between the two markets as well as make it easier for Albertans to access destinations in Central and South America.

Aeromexico — Mexico’s flagship carrier — launched its non-stop service from YYC on June 1, making Calgary the airline’s fourth Canadian destination along with Montreal, Toronto, and Vancouver.

“We’ve only been flying for two weeks, obviously, but so far load factors are around 70 per cent,” said Aeromexico’s chief revenue officer Anko van der Werff at a celebratory event in Calgary on Thursday. “So, not bad for the first two weeks.”

Aeromexico — which is 49 per cent owned by Delta Airlines — has been rapidly expanding in Canada, launching its first direct service to Montreal in 2011. Six years later, the airline serves Canada with more than 9,900 seats per week and more than 60 weekly non-stop flights.

“Two years ago, we had only one daily frequency going into Canada, Mexico-Montreal,” van der Werff said. “Now it’s double-daily Montreal, double-daily Vancouver, double-daily Toronto, and now of course, Calgary-Mexico.”

The rapid growth is due in part to the Canadian government’s 2016 decision to lift visa restrictions for Mexican tourists, a move that is expected to contribute to Mexico being Canada’s strongest source of tourism growth in 2017, according to the Conference Board of Canada…
