New Zealand: International aviation organisation opposes proposed tourist tax

The international aviation industry has come out against a proposed tourist levy saying airlines should not be saddled with the extra costs involved in collecting it.

International Aviation Transport Association (IATA) regional director Vinoop"‹ Goel"‹ argued that the revenue raised by Labour’s pre-election suggestion of a $25 per head charge on international visitors would be outweighed by loss of business.

His letter to Transport Minister Phil Twyford claimed passenger numbers could fall by 78,000 a year as price sensitive travellers reacted negatively to increased costs…
