American Airlines cancels 2,000 flights out of Florida hubs ahead of Hurricane Irma

American Airlines cancelled thousands of flights as Hurricane Irma approached South Florida Thursday, leaving would-be evacuees scrambling to find rides out of Miami and other airports in the region.

The airline announced cancellations out of its Miami, Fort Lauderdale, Fort Myers, and West Palm Beach hubs beginning Thursday and lasting through the weekend.

The airline also cancelled flights scheduled to arrive in Miami Friday from Europe and South America.
