ALTA brings together experts in Miami to discuss legal and aeropolitical challenges in the region

Legal and aeropolitical experts from the Americas, the Caribbean, and Europe met in Miami for the ALTA Aviation Law Americas Conference 2026, an annual event organized by the Latin American and Caribbean Air Transport Association (ALTA) to discuss the most relevant issues that the sector is facing.

The event brought together executives from airlines operating in the region, representatives from law firms, and international organizations. Key topics for the sector were analyzed throughout the day, including:

  • Geopolitics and global regulation: The impact of international sanctions on air operations, international cooperation in fragmented environments, and the global reach of EU261 passenger rights regulations.
  • Markets and competitiveness: The legal landscape of trade and tariffs in the U.S., taxation in the Brazilian market, and implementation of the Cape Town Convention in the region.
  • Technology and innovation: The FAA’s regulatory framework for Advanced Air Mobility (AAM), drone regulation in air cargo, cross-border e-commerce, and the legal risks of AI use in the passenger experience.
  • Operations and crisis management: Real-world cases, legal lessons, and enforcement challenges in handling disruptive passengers, as well as an analysis of legal liability in the use of automated technology tools.

«Regulation can be an engine of growth or become an obstacle. In 2025, nearly 480 million passengers traveled across Latin America and the Caribbean, demonstrating the enormous potential of our market. Brazil and Argentina show how different regulatory and economic approaches can influence competitiveness and connectivity. At the same time, opportunities like the recovery of connectivity in Venezuela and agreements like ALAS can drive new investment, routes, and economic growth. The priority is clear: governments and industry must work together to create balanced, predictable rules that allow aviation to grow and generate greater connectivity across the region,» said Peter Cerdá, CEO of ALTA.

The ALTA Aviation Law Americas Conference is the leading legal forum for aviation in Latin America and the Caribbean, and since its founding has promoted dialogue, regulatory updates, and the development of joint solutions among regulators, airlines, and the international legal community.
