Safety Culture and Leadership play a critical role in safety management, preventing aviation accidents and incidents. Recognizing this, in October 2023, IATA launched its Safety Leadership Charter to strengthen in a consistent manner this foundation within airlines.
Today, we are proud to have over 200 signatories airlines, demonstrating strong executive level awareness and growing commitment to advancing safety culture within their organizations.
Grounded in 8 guiding principles, the Charter promotes learning, safety-mindedness, and continuous improvement of organizational safety practices and behaviors.
Putting these principles into practice is essential. To support this, IATA Safety Leadership initiative includes:
✅ Safety Leadership in Practice e Library, showcasing real examples and initiatives from signatory organizations
✅ Integration into the IATA Operational Safety Audit (IOSA) strengthening safety leadership and culture practices and behaviors through IOSA Maturity Assessment and risk based auditing
✅ IATA Aviation Safety Culture survey (I-ASC) providing organizations with a structured tool to assess, understand, and improve their safety culture
✅Safety Talks, a series of videos from airline CEOs sharing leadership insights and experiences
Together, these efforts help raise awareness and embed safety leadership at every level, driving meaningful and sustainable progress across our industry.
If your organization has signed the Safety Leadership Charter, we encourage you to share your initiatives, success stories, and lessons learned here. Your examples help inspire the global aviation community and enrich the Safety Leadership in Practice e Library. supporting collective learning and continuous improvement across the industry.
