Focus on Latin America’s promise as LATAM hosts IATA AGM

LATAM Group officially hosted the 82nd IATA Annual General Meeting, the world’s premier aviation gathering, which returned to the region after 27 years.

On this stage, the CEO of LATAM Airlines Group, Roberto Alvo, officially assumed the chairmanship of the IATA Board of Governors, marking the return of a leader from the region to the head of the global organisation after more than a decade.

LATAM Group concluded its participation this Monday, 8 June, at the AGM, which was held in Rio de Janeiro. As the official host of the main gathering for the global commercial aviation industry and authorities, LATAM welcomed the AGM on its return to South America after 27 years. This marked the third time Brazil has hosted the event, which featured an opening address by the Vice President of the Republic of Brazil, Geraldo Alckmin.

Throughout the assembly, discussions highlighted how South America faces significant structural challenges, including infrastructure deficits, restrictive regulations, and a disproportionate tax burden compared to other markets. In tandem with the last South American edition of the IATA AGM, the event outlined how aviation has transformed since 1999, and how it must address current challenges and opportunities to remain relevant and strategic for all countries in the region.

“The AGM was a great opportunity to show the world the potential of South American aviation and the role it can play in the development of our countries. To transform that potential into greater connectivity, tourism, trade, and opportunities that benefit passengers, we must continue to promote sound public policies with a long-term vision. This will allow us to increase efficiency and strengthen the region’s competitiveness,” stated Roberto Alvo, CEO of LATAM Airlines Group.

LATAM advocates for the adoption of public policies capable of unlocking aviation’s potential in South America, where demand is still restricted in certain markets due to high tax costs, boarding and connection fees, litigation, and airport infrastructure constraints.

“We are constantly fighting short-term battles when we should be reducing the cost of flying and driving greater efficiency for this industry. It is essential to secure a long-term development vision and regulatory stability,” noted Jerome Cadier, CEO of LATAM Airlines Brazil.

IATA announced that Roberto Alvo, CEO of LATAM Airlines Group, takes office as the Chair of the IATA Board of Governors. Alvo becomes the 84th chair of the organization’s board, serving a one-year term that will extend until the next AGM, scheduled for late May 2027 in Xiamen, China…
