Brazil may lead production of sustainable aviation fuel, experts say

Amid global efforts to decarbonize the aviation sector, experts and business leaders believe Brazil has the potential to lead the market and establish itself as a key international hub for sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) production.

This assessment was discussed at the Brazil Climate Summit 2024 on Wednesday (18) in New York, during deliberations on Brazil’s energy future. The idea is for aircraft to be powered by SAF, as this molecule is similar to fossil-based kerosene, negating the need for modifications to aircraft engines and refueling infrastructure.

João Auler, managing director and head of infrastructure and natural resources at UBS Brazil, cited the example of Brazil’s solar energy sector, which, due to strong public policy based on subsidies, is now one of the fastest-growing sources in the energy mix with decreasing costs.

However, Pedro de La Fuente, senior manager of external affairs and sustainability at the International Air Transport Association (IATA) Americas, asserts that both Brazil and the world require specific policies to boost this emerging industry. He cautions, though, that the market cannot rely solely on subsidies, given the government’s limited resources.

SAF can be produced through various technological routes and using raw materials such as oilseeds, ethanol, and urban solid waste, which positions Brazil advantageously. According to the International Energy Agency (IEA), sustainable aviation fuel needs to scale up to 11% of the current consumption, which is nearly zero…
