Four airports operated by Hawaii Department of Transportation have taken important steps in carbon management by joining the Airport Carbon Accreditation programme. Hilo Airport and Kahului Airport have entered the programme at Level 1, while Kona Airport and Lihue Airport have joined directly at Level 3.
Together, the airports have set a target to reduce their carbon emissions by 50% by 2030 and to reach net zero by 2045. Efforts to reach this goal include a full inventory of emissions across all scopes, replacing fossil fuel-powered vehicles with zero-emission electric alternatives, and engaging with 29 operational stakeholders to align sustainability objectives and explore new opportunities for collaboration.
Innovative solutions are already making a difference on the ground. At Kahului Airport, an electric tram powered in part by solar panels transports passengers between parking areas and the terminal, providing a cleaner and more energy-efficient service. These kinds of initiatives, alongside a clear and ambitious decarbonisation roadmap, underscore Hawaii Airports’ commitment to climate leadership in the Pacific region.
