IATA Welcomes Brazil’s New Fuel for the Future Law

The International Air Transport Association (IATA) welcomes Brazil’s new Fuel for the Future Law, which represents a significant milestone in the country’s energy transition and reinforces its’ commitment to positioning itself as a global leader in the production of alternative fuels, including Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF).

Passing the new law, President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva highlighted Brazil’s strategic position on the global energy market “Brazil is the country that will make the biggest energy revolution on the planet, with no competitor to match us. Our country will come out ahead because it has the capacity to produce and research and has access to the necessary skilled labor. We’ve already planted, watered and now it’s time to reap”. IATA believes that this vision puts Brazil on a solid path towards leading the production and use of SAF, which is essential for decarbonizing aviation.

The Minister of Mines and Energy, Alexandre Silveira, also stressed the importance of advancing SAF production: “Today, we are planting a new seed, the fuel of the future. With the production of SAF, we will no longer need to import any quantity of aviation kerosene”.

IATA believes that energy independence in the aviation sector and the promotion of SAF are key to achieving global sustainability goals. The Future Fuel Law in Brazil represents another crucial step towards the decarbonization of aviation, with an emphasis on collaboration between government, the private sector and international organizations. “IATA welcomes the adoption of the Fuel for the Future Law in Brazil which introduces a legal framework to promote the production and use of SAF as it represents the most significant lever for air transport to reach net zero CO2 emissions by 2050”, said Hemant Mistry, IATA’s Director of Energy Transition.

Pietro Mendes, National Secretary for Petroleum, Natural Gas and Biofuels commented: “We need to build the guidelines for the fuel of the future in a collective way, just as we did with the airline industry with the participation of ABEAR and IATA. Dialogue is essential”.

IATA is committed to continue working with the Brazilian government and other key players to ensure that Brazil becomes a global leader in the production and use of sustainable fuels, driving the transition to cleaner and more responsible aviation.
