Puerto Rico and Iberia renew their promotional agreement at FITUR 2025

Puerto Rico Governor Jenniffer González, Puerto Rico Tourism Company Executive Director Willianette Robles and Iberia President Marco Sansavini today renewed the promotional agreement between the Government of Puerto Rico and the leading airline between Europe and Latin America during work on the Puerto Rico exhibit at FITUR 2025.

The renewal of this agreement represents an economic impact of approximately $29 million. The marketing plan outlined aims to expand Puerto Rico’s presence and increase the number of visitors from primary and secondary markets such as Spain, the United Kingdom, Germany, Italy, and France. Among the initiatives included are: the promotion of the destination in a number of sales and marketing actions such as: publications in Iberia’s print media and digital platforms; e-blasts with Puerto Rico hotel products to specialised segments of the airline’s customer database; as well as themed activities in the airline’s facilities and VIP lounge at Madrid’s Barajas International Airport; workshops on Puerto Rico will be held for industry partners in northern Spain and France.

“Our product is attractive and has everything necessary to compete with other destinations in all areas. The agreements between the Government of Puerto Rico and Iberia have shown to be of great benefit to the destination, resulting in a 40% increase in visitor traffic from Europe using the Madrid-San Juan route when comparing figures for 2024 vs 2023, the highest number in over a decade.”, Robles said.

The executive director added that “with the increase to a daily year-round flight, the capacity of the route will increase the current inventory to a total of 210,000 available seats, between the two routes. This will allow more European passengers and other international destinations to have greater accessibility and options to plan a holiday or conduct business on the island”.

Marco Sansavini, President and CEO at Iberia, said: “For Iberia, renewing this tourism promotion agreement with the government of Puerto Rico is very good news, because, in addition to strengthening and deepening the excellent relationship we have with the authorities of this wonderful island, it allows us to better approach all the tourist attractions it has to offer to our customers in Europe. We have been connecting Puerto Rico with Europe for 75 years now and alliances like this lay the foundations for many more years to come.”.

The route connecting the cities of Madrid and San Juan is operated by an Airbus A330-200 with a capacity for 288 passengers in Business and Economy cabins. Iberia Group serves 143 destinations in 48 countries in Europe, the Americas, Africa, the Middle East and Asia, as well as offering 383 destinations through collaborative agreements with other international airlines.

It is worth highlighting, in turn, the greater travel possibilities offered by some of Iberia’s new destinations for Puerto Ricans, such as the recently launched route to Tokyo, Japan, and other fashionable international cities such as Doha, Cairo, Tromso, Salzburg and Innsbruck.

During the FITUR event, which began on Wednesday 22 January, a group of Puerto Rican tourism industry partners, including the Honourable Jenniffer González, Tourism Company officials, representatives from various municipalities, lodging companies, tour operators, and related services, are working together to highlight the destination’s attributes and reach marketing and commercial agreements that will benefit Puerto Rico’s economic development.
