Tom Jobim International Airport, known as RIOgaleão, is moving towards a more sustainable future by participating in the “IATA Environmental Assessment (IEnvA)” certification program developed by the International Air Transport Association (IATA).
This program aims to identify environmental impacts and provide tools to measure and improve the sustainability performance of airports, consolidating RIOgaleão as the first airport in South America and the fifth in the world to join this initiative.
The IEnvA certification, initially created for airline operators, has been adapted since 2023 to cover airport operators as well. It assesses various environmental aspects, including accessibility, airport operations, facilities management and infrastructure, and covers emissions related to noise, waste, water, energy and even wildlife traffic.
Milena Martorelli, RIOgaleão’s sustainability manager, highlights the airport’s ongoing efforts: “Throughout its history, RIOgaleão has invested in sustainable initiatives that seek to minimize its environmental impact. As one of the state’s economic engines, we are committed to the environmentally and socially sustainable growth of Rio de Janeiro. IEnvA is a new signature for our environmental management.”
The certification process, which will take an average of 18 months, will involve training, audits and continuous development of processes to ensure improvements in environmental management. The result will be RIOgaleão’s official certification by the IATA program…
