U.S. airlines have implemented a fare hike of $2 to $4 each way over the past week, according to the website Fare Compare, which tracks such hikes.
The hike was initiated by JetBlue on July 27 and then matched on July 28 by Untied and Southwest. Delta joined in on July 29 and American raised its fares on July 30.
Fare Compare declared the hike successful on Thursday because airlines had not rolled back the increases.
Fare hikes don"™t necessarily translate into more expensive fares. The reason is because airlines sell tickets under many different fare codes. So if tickets aren"™t selling well under one fare code, an airline can change the mix of tickets it has on sale to favor cheaper fare codes…
