LOT Polish Airlines Reports SAF-Related Emissions Reductions in IATA CO2 Connect Calculator

LOT Polish Airlines has become the first airline to report its data in the IATA CO2 Connect emissions calculator to account for carbon emissions reductions linked to the use of Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF).

The SAF calculation follows specific accounting rules and practices on how to incorporate SAF into per-passenger CO2 data, ensuring greater accuracy and transparency in emissions reporting.

“SAF is currently the most effective way to reduce aviation emissions. As we scale up the use of these fuels, we want passengers to understand the impact of emissions reductions and our contribution to the industry’s goal of achieving #netzero emissions by 2050,” said Anna Kowalska, expert responsible for data collection and Measurement, Reporting, and Verification (MRV) at LOT Polish Airlines. “At LOT, we are committed to building a transparent framework for credible SAF accounting, working closely with IATA to ensure consistent and robust MRV standards across the industry.”

LOT was among the first airlines to submit operational data to IATA CO2 Connect, which has now surpassed 100 participating carriers. The development reflects growing pressure on airlines to move beyond high-level sustainability pledges towards measurable and verifiable emissions reporting frameworks — an issue increasingly relevant for cargo operators and freight forwarders facing Scope 3 scrutiny.

IATA CO2 Connect

IATA CO2 Connect is an emissions calculator developed using real airline data and based on industry-approved recommended practices that can be easily integrated into operational systems.

Travel agencies, booking platforms, freight forwarders, and corporate travel managers, among others, are seeking to offer more accurate visibility into the carbon footprint of flights and shipments. Providing customers with precise and transparent data is key to enabling them to track, reduce, report, and offset part of their carbon footprint.
