Macaé Airport becomes the first self-sufficient energy airport in Brazil

Macaé Airport, operated by Zurich Airport Brasil, inaugurated a new solar plant in February that now enables the airport to meet its entire electricity demand with renewable energy. With this development, it becomes the first airport in Brazil to be fully self-sufficient in clean energy.

The installation includes 1,444 solar panels with a total capacity of 1 MW. Completed within a few months after works began in October 2025, the project forms part of a broader effort to reduce the airport’s carbon footprint and support more sustainable operations.

Macaé Airport is accredited at Level 4 of Airport Carbon Accreditation and has aligned its carbon management with long term climate goals. Together with Florianópolis and Vitória airports, also operated by Zurich Airport Brasil, it aims to achieve net zero emissions by 2040, reflecting a coordinated approach across the group to reduce emissions and strengthen carbon management across its operations.
