JetBlue traffic rises but revenue measure is flat

JetBlue Airways Corp. said Thursday that traffic rose 7.8 percent in June, nearly filling all the seats created through expansion.

However, a key revenue figure was flat, indicating that JetBlue, like other airlines, is struggling to raise average fares.

The airline recently announced that points passengers earn in its TrueBlue loyalty program will no longer expire. The change lowered the revenue-per-seat ratio by about 1 percentage point, the airline said.

Traffic rose as passengers flew 3.13 billion miles last month, compared with 2.90 billion miles in June 2012.

JetBlue increased passenger-carrying capacity by 8 percent. Airlines usually raise capacity by operating more flights or using bigger planes.

Since capacity expanded slightly faster than traffic, there were a few more empty seats than last year. The average June flight was 85.7 percent full, compared with 85.9 percent in June 2012.

Shares of New York-based JetBlue rose 2 cents to close at $6.43.
